Every month, we get together with one of our dear friends and skilled artist, Katie Holzheimer, to do an art class. Each month, Katie plans a different project that fits with the time of year. In Springtime, we decorate flower pots, and in October, we usually paint pumpkins. This Spring, the Core Members took time during their monthly art classes to create canvas paintings of their dream home and a portrait. Katie, Ann, and Beth – all the volunteers who help plan and teach art class – let the Core Members create the paintings how they wanted. It was so fun to see everyone’s different painting styles and preferences. Dave used a lot of blue paint for his, while Stephanie tried to use every color imaginable. Lisa created her portrait using a unique dotting method, creating a polka dot effect.

After everyone created their own unique paintings, they created short stories about them. Ann spoke with everyone individually and asked questions about their piece: “What is this here?” or “How did you paint this?” and “Tell me how you feel about this painting.” After getting information, she crafted it into a bio, and they were displayed next to their piece at the art show.

We even held an art show reception so everyone could see their artwork on display. Board members, family members, and friends came out to the Orange Senior Center to check out the art. We even made new friends of some of the staff at the center and are looking forward to the next chance to connect with them.
