Assistants

Assistants are anyone who participates in a L'Arche community on a daily and/or weekly basis and receive remuneration for their time shared in community. This includes not only the direct care assistants but also the leadership team. In community we are all assistants but may have different roles besides that of providing direct care, all of which support the whole: Executive Director, Program Director, Director of Development and Marketing, House Leader, as well as administrative support.

The direct care assistant shares their time within one of our homes providing the necessary care while involving the core members in as much of the daily routine as possible. An assistant in a L'Arche home may find themselves assisting with: cooking, cleaning, hygiene tasks (some intimate), skill development, recreational activities, medical appointments, community gatherings, behavioral interventions, medication administration and so on. More importantly assistants provide friendship and companionship which makes a L'Arche house a home. Each assistant works alongside a group of other assistants who make up the house team led by the "house leader".

L'Arche Cleveland has openings for assistants on an ongoing basis and we fill our openings from local, national, and international applicants. Our assistants either "live-in" one of our homes (room and board provided) or they "live-out" and commute. We are blessed with many long term assistants who tend to see their work more as a vocation than a job. These assistants play an important role in community and help in orientating new assistants to the traditions of L'Arche as well as to the tried and tested daily care routines of the home. They also provide a valuable resource on the history of the core members and community as a whole.

We accept applications on an ongoing basis for individuals interested in applying to become a direct care assistant in a L'Arche Cleveland home and have many different remuneration packages to consider (this is discussed during the application process).
